Even a handful of keyboard shortcuts can cut down on work time and provide a more fluid user experience. Many tasks can be accomplished with keyboard shortcuts alone, and FileMaker Pro gives users the ability to create custom shortcuts.<\/p><p>The shortcuts in bold cater to Mac users, with Windows shortcuts included in parentheses. A full list of shortcuts can be found in the FileMaker documentation:&nbsp;<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.claris.com\/en\/pro-help\/content\/shortcuts-os-x.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mac shortcuts<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.claris.com\/en\/pro-help\/content\/shortcuts-windows.html?Highlight=windows%20shortcuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Windows shortcuts\u00a0<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>This article details the shortcuts I use frequently that make development easier and faster. You probably have these symbols for reference on your keyboard, but just in case, \u2318 is Command, and \u2325 is Option.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Navigation &amp; Database Shortcuts<\/strong>&nbsp;in FileMaker<\/h3><p>Some of the most useful shortcuts navigate through FileMaker view options, and open and close the Script Workspace and Database Manager.&nbsp;<\/p><p><strong>\u2318+B&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+B)&nbsp;<\/em><strong>opens browse mode, \u2318+F&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+F)&nbsp;<\/em><strong>opens find mode, and \u2318+L&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+F)&nbsp;<\/em><strong>opens Layout mode.<\/strong>&nbsp;These three shortcuts will be your best friends if they\u2019re not already.<\/p><p>To open the Database Manager, press&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+Shift+D<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Ctrl+Shift+D<\/em>). There are shortcuts for many functions within the Database Manager, but I\u2019m going to touch on a couple that work in the relationship graph.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FileMaker Relationship Graph Shortcuts<\/h3><p>If you know exactly which table you want, you can&nbsp;<strong>simply start typing the name of the table<\/strong>&nbsp;and it will find the first table that matches what you\u2019re typing.<\/p><p>Users can click and drag to select multiple tables. If you have a busy relationship graph with tons of tables, or you need to move an entire table occurrence group to make more space, you can&nbsp;<strong>hold \u2318&nbsp;<\/strong>(<em>Ctrl)<\/em><strong>&nbsp;while you click and drag<\/strong>&nbsp;to call a selection box which will only select tables that fit completely in the box. To toggle the display state of your selected tables, press<strong>&nbsp;\u2318+T<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Ctrl+T<\/em>).&nbsp;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"568\" height=\"354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.directimpactsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/clickAndDrag-1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12184\"\/><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\"><strong>Scripting Shortcuts<\/strong>&nbsp;in FileMaker<\/h3><p>To open the Script Workspace, press&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+Shift+S<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Ctrl+Shift+S).<\/em><\/p><p>Adding comments to scripts with&nbsp;<strong>#<\/strong>&nbsp;is always important, but what if you want to comment out an entire block of code? To disable single or multiple lines of a script, highlight all of the lines you want to disable and press&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+\/<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Ctrl+\/)<\/em>. The same shortcut applies if you want to enable it again. This shortcut is only available in FileMaker Pro.<\/p><p>Don\u2019t forget to save your scripts with&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+S<\/strong><em>&nbsp;(Ctrl+S).&nbsp;<\/em>To save it and run it immediately, use&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+Option+R<\/strong><em>&nbsp;(Ctrl+Shift+R).&nbsp;<\/em>To save all scripts and immediately debug the current script, use&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+Shift+Option+R<\/strong><em>&nbsp;(Ctrl+Shift+Alt+R)<\/em><\/p><p><strong>Layout Shortcuts<\/strong>&nbsp;in FileMaker<\/p><p>There are a ton of helpful layout shortcuts, and I highly recommend keeping a list of your favorites nearby until you have them memorized.&nbsp;<\/p><p>When you\u2019re in layout mode, the fastest way to navigate to different layouts is&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+Option+K&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+Alt+K).&nbsp;<\/em>This will bring up the \u201copen quickly\u201d search bar in which you can enter whatever layout you want to navigate to.<\/p><p>Sometimes you have many objects on top of each other, and only want to edit specific ones. The best shortcuts in this situation are lock\/unlock and move to front\/back. If you want to lock an item in place, use&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+Option+L<\/strong><em>&nbsp;(Ctrl+Alt+L),&nbsp;<\/em>and to unlock use<em>&nbsp;<\/em><strong>\u2318+Shift+Option+L&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L).<\/em><\/p><p>To bring objects forward one layer, use&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+Shift+[&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+Shift+[)<\/em><strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong>or to bring objects all the way to the front, use<strong>&nbsp;\u2318+Option+[&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+Alt+[).&nbsp;<\/em>To send objects<em>&nbsp;<\/em>back one layer, use<em>&nbsp;<\/em><strong>\u2318+Shift+]&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+Shift+]),&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;and<em>&nbsp;<\/em><strong>\u2318+Option+]&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+Alt+])&nbsp;<\/em>to send them all the way back.<\/p><p>To quickly group objects, select all of the objects you want to group and press&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+R&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+R)<\/em><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong>If you want to ungroup them, it\u2019s<strong>&nbsp;\u2318+Shift+R&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl-Shift-R).<\/em><\/p><p>To align a group of selected objects to one edge, select all of the objects you want to align and press&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>\u2318+Option+Arrow key&nbsp;<\/strong><em>(Ctrl+Alt+Arrow key),&nbsp;<\/em>using the same arrow key as the edge you want to align.<\/p><p>Say you have a field or a text box that you want to copy exactly to preserve the size and style. Hold&nbsp;<strong>Option(\u2325) as you drag an object and everything will be duplicated<\/strong>. You have to be careful with this when copying buttons or anything with a script, because it will copy all of the functionality of the object as well.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"380\" height=\"242\" src=\"https:\/\/www.directimpactsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/option-click-and-drag-1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12186\"\/><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">Button Bar Tips<\/h3><p>To reorder&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/directimpactsolutions.com\/en\/button-bar-techniques\/\">buttons in a button bar<\/a>, click and hold the button you want to move, then drag it after you\u2019ve held on for a second. If you move too fast, it will drag the whole button bar.&nbsp;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"299\" src=\"https:\/\/www.directimpactsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/button-bar-reorder-1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12188\"\/><\/figure><p>This is hardly an exhaustive list of shortcuts, as these are just my personal favorites.
